Mathon Church, An Historical Tour

The Early Days of the Current Building

The current building was erected in the eleventh century, probably by the occupant of Church Farm and local people. Like many other country churches it began as a much smaller building. It is possible to get an idea as to its dimensions from the herringbone masonry under the eaves of the external South wall.  The church was dedicated to St Margaret until 1512 when the dedication was changed to St John the Baptist and the parish was made a vicarage.
